I went and measured the machine. The base is almost 14.5" long from left to right edge and it is almost 7" deep. The website
http://www.singersewinginfo.co.uk/28/ has a wonderful chart on it that has helped show that I was wrong about the model. This is a 127 and I am coming to this conclusion due to there being no mounting point on the column for the bobbin winder in the low position. The other 27 that I have is the same dimensions, but has a mount built into the column where the bobbin winder is attached, about 1.5 to 2" above the bed level.
Sorry I was confusing. This is all new to me and I am learning quickly. I have spent hours trying to decipher what the machine was, and came to incorrect conclusions. I believe the belt guard is attached to the bobbin winder.
