Bonnie's first option worked just fine for this block. I used BEST PRESS on my fabric to stiffen it up a bit, and followed her instructions and made my sample block in no time at all! I just plain didn't "over think" it and trust Bonnie completely - if she said it works, why not give it a whirl. I also took a pic of a sign in my kitchen that fit the bill tonight.
