You can also layer battings. A good combination is a wool batting on top of a cotton batting. You can also layer poly batting over cotton; you just won't get the complete "breathability" of using all natural fibers. Just be careful if you are quilting on a domestic machine; you can make the quilt sandwich too thick to slide easily under your presser foot.
