As you are doing your research keep an eye out for any cleaning instructions from a former member called Lostn51 or something like that. Do ... not ... use ... those ... instructions. They will cause much harm to the finish and decals of your machine.
Most of his instructions have been deleted, but some may lurk in the recesses of the forum.

Just to simplify things, to clean the finish of the head use cotton balls, or those makeup removing pads and sewing machine oil only. Go slow, it took a hundred years for that machine to get like it is, so do not get impatient.
