Tartan makes a good point! I just did a search on other quilts like this and most of them don't have a sashing.... you could use the background colour to make a sashing and that would keep it looking similar to the original design but make it easier to piece the top together.
what creative thinking to suggest a narrow sashing out of the same background fabric--that would make it easier with the seams coming together AND keep the floating tumbler concept!
