What you're doing is really great. You never know what kind of budding artist is in the group.
I would look on craigslist. I know that in my area I can find some machines in the $50-$100.range. Some are
the newer less expensive Singer and Brother machines and some are the older Singer and Kenmore machines from the
70's and 80's.
