I switched to Schmetz Microtex 70 needles and 50wt Aurifil thread and my seams have been spot on since.
I don't know why piecers use a universal needle and thick thread. CT Essential Cotton thread is too thick for me for piecing. If used in top and bottom it makes a very thick seam line. I do use the Essential poly for piecing. It's 70 wt.
