I kind of like those sewing machine people. And since you can buy decals, who's to say they didn't take a horrid looking machine to use. Once cut up, repainted and re-decaled, it could look super nice.
Right now supply still outnumbers demand, so machines are cheap enough for people to buy and cut up with the hopes they'll be worth more that way. Sure, it would be neat if it was not the case, but then I probably would not have my collection. I use to collect something else, but I'm priced out of the market now as the demand has gone way up.
If I'm really lucky, when I get ready to liquidate my collection (in 10-20 years) it may be worth more than I paid for it. However, I'm not counting on it.
