The reason I use the little rolls of veneer is because it pretty much allows the screws to center in the old holes but fills in the torn out wood. You can get veneer in small rolls at most box lumber / home improvement stores.

Or keep your eyes out for old furniture people toss, much of it will have peeling veneer you can salvage for other things.
