40 weight thread is used for machine quilting, 50 weight is for piecing. I piece on a treadle machine and quilt with a,Pfaff QE 4.2 (domestic machine). I use all cotton threads: Aurifil, Gutterman,Mettler. The really cheap poly threads aren't something I like to use in my quilts.
