I made one that was 54x64, backed with flannel for extra warmth and coziness, and made it a quillow so there was a pillow pocket on the back that was also a foot warmer when used as a quilt. I put a handle on it too so it was easy to carry when it was folded up. You're so nice to do such a thoughtful thing for your friend!
The place for the feet is important to me. I use my "foot pocket" everyday when I sit in my chair. Even with shoes on, I can tell when the pocket is not in place on my feet. I would think chemo patients would really enjoy a snug piece of blanket over their feet.
