It is basically this: Sandwich and quilt your sections. Join your sections with a 1/4" seam, right sides together (top to top). That is 6 layers. Now take a 2" strip of backing fabric, folded in half (so 1") and sew it to the seam you just created, just like you would binding. This makes the seam now have 8 layers. You can do this is two steps, or sew the sections and "binding" all at the same time. Open up the quilt, with the backing facing up. Your "binding" strip that you sewed now gets turned over the open seam. I hand stitch this in place.
