My guess is that the piecing seams in quilt tops give them more weight and make them less likely to be as fluffy as a comforter. I haven't had a comforter since the 90s because of allergies, but the ones we had were made of wide yardage, and the only seams were the quilting. And not tons of those, either, for maxmum puff.
