Now that you've pointed it out, I see the hexagons, too. I think this pattern can also be made with hexagons split in half with different colors on each half. In that case it would probably be put together with EPP'ing. Whereas if made with the large triangles, they would be straight seamed side by side and the construction would be all straight seams with the rows on the diagonal.
