It's a bit more work but I've made several baby jelly roll quilts. I took all the dupes out of the jelly roll so I had only one of each fabric. I cut the strips in half at the fold, then folded them in half and cut them again so 4 pieces out of each strip. Then I put them in a paper bag, shook it, pulled random ones out and as long as they didn't match I sewed them together. Then go as normal. I did a zigzag stitch down the strip sides to quilt then folded the back over for binding. Cutting into 4 pieces gave me almost none of the puddling that you can get.
