I think the main thing with Bonnie's quilts is that they tend to be busy with lots of small pieces. To me, with her quilts it's all about the pattern, and so value is super important. You have to be careful to keep the relative values the same when going with a different color scheme, if you want the pattern to look the same. The paint chips are to help match hue, but looked at in gray scale they can also show the value relationships between her different colors.
