With that said, you may want to figure a way to cover the batting also to keep it free of pet hair & dust.
I have a roll under my LQM(but no cat to worry about). I slit the box it came in and took off one side, then I covered the roll with the rest of the box. I write how much I take off each time I cut a piece off so I'll have and idea of how much is left. It is open to the floor but I've never noticed and problems and I've had it there for years. You could leave the fourth side on the box and tape it shut so the cat can't get at it then slide the box to one side when you cut from the roll.
