I have to wonder if this machine was produced by The Pine Sewing Machine Co. of Japan... Singer was in a partnership with them in the 1960's. I have Pine-built SINGER Model 223 sewing machine that dates to 1965, but it does not carry the 'U' suffix on its model number.
