The pattern was written in the 80's when that sort of thing was 'in vogue'. I would put the corners on it. And I believe the quilt is birthed, as well. Nowadays we bind, not birth. You can bring you pattern up to date by adding corners and binding the finished rectangular quilt.
This was one of Eleanor Burns' golden oldies... I have the book around here somewhere too.
