My dad's mom made pone quite often when we were camping.
She would make hot cereal, probably Cream of Wheat
and the next morning she would slice the cold leftovers and fry them
Sometimes they were the evening starch, and sometimes we'd put syrup or jam on them for dessert.
boil and mash sweet potatoes, cool and then fry?
