Every piece in this project is fused to a backing, including the background pieces. The instructions suggest quilting by sewing around the edge of each appliqued piece raw-edge applique style. I understand that part.

What I don't understand is, how do I make a quilt sandwich and fasten the layers together without making random holes in all of the applique pieces? The holes won't go away if I do. It's a small piece, 22 x 17 inches.

I'm wondering if I can use a spray on adhesive to hold the layers together while I quilt it. Any ideas about this?
