I tried my first one recently and went with no batting. It is fine, but if I did it again I'd put in a really light batting but I like that squish factor
Also to consider is my fleece was very dark and while it didn't show through my front, it would have with a lighter top. It was easy to work with, I did an all over clam shell with about a 6" repeat.
