I always baste for handquilting regardless of the size. There is so much handling of the piece that it will invariably shift on the batting and backing if you don't baste. Enjoy. The thing I love most about handquilting is that I try to take my time and enjoy the process. Stress and quilting don't produce a good project at my house.
