Free motion is a terrific skill and it does take some time to get comfortable with it. When I started learning to free motion quilt, someone suggested that I play music while quilting and it does helps. I also have quilted some with just a "wavy" pattern in my quilting. It is so easy and very forgiving if you stumble. And, it is fast. I can do a baby quilt in about an hour.
