I have a crumb quilter from here on the boards that accepts my boxes of trimmings and such, I no longer save anything smaller than 6.5" x larger than a square. A lot of what I send her is still in the scrap or at least WoF stage and larger than crumbs, but as I say she can always cut down and I can't cut up. Because of her I've been able to see some really wonderful projects and techniques.

I think the videos really help explain it all. Some people use foundations, but I think most don't.

It isn't quite the same thing, but from a post I found here and then the discovery of a bunch (and I mean a bunch!) of little precut fan bags in a box of estate sale fabric I saw, I'm going to (someday) use this technique and then use the strips as sashing.
I don't get what the 'reciept' is for when making string quilts
