Yes! My friend also called it a darning foot! In fact, one of my Bernina's called the FMQ foot a darning foot. My theory is the same as your grandmother's I'll put a patch on or sew up a ripped seam but I'm not darning anything!

My mother darned socks by hand. I still have her darning egg but it's just for sentimental value. I'm definitely not darning socks.
