You say it's a baby quilt, but you didn't say it was a crib quilt. If it's a "tummy time" size, you might consider making it like an "I spy quilt" (my favorite quilt to make). I've made them using the disappearing 9 patch and pattern really liked them. I have also made them as "happy blocks". It's a "play' quilt that they will enjoy while really young and use as a quilt as they get older.
