The dial lowers/raises the feed dogs, lowering some, but not all the way down, for lighter fabrics such as silk; all the way down for darning (and maybe other things).
Thanks for the response. I figured it was for something like that. Mine has Down, 1 2 3 Up on the base plate under the dial. The manual is helpful too. I figured it was a singer clone, but didn't know what model number to look under. Thanks again.
