I hope you can send photo. Did you look to see if it had a JA or JC number? A serial number doesn't help with dating these machines, other than probably in the 1950s. There were importers from the late 1940s to early 1950s that did not properly display that the machines were made in Japan. Since it came in a case that says Brother it could be that they made the machine, but a lot can happen in the 70 or so years since it was made.

I think hand cranks are neat. Is yours a plastic or wooden handle?
