As a new quilter I recommend you start with something small. A table runner or sofa throw perhaps to hone your skills. Do not choose a king size quilt as your first project. LOL Remember accurate cutting and piecing makes your blocks go together smoother and with less hair tearing.:-) Others have already suggested patterns for beginners and those are a good place to begin.
