My quilt guild was talking about doing wheelchair quilts. Our community services chair is retiring from the job at the end of the year, so the project has been put on the shelf for the remainder of this year.
I made the one from
Lovie Lap Quilts as a prototype. (it's also for sale on etsy) It's pretty "fiddly", but it seems like the most thought out pattern (that curved pocket was a bear to turn and press). Also, I'm not sure of how that small edge will hold up to the commercial laundry that nursing homes use. Most other quilters are more experienced quilters than me, but it took quite a bit of time for me to make. I would definitely make it for my friend, grandmother, etc., but I'm not sure about making it again and again for donation.
It also is a "cut as you go" pattern, which I don't like. I like cutting all the pieces at once. You can tell it's not a pattern designed by a professional quilt designer, as it's sometimes hard to follow.
The inside of the pockets are flannel, so hands can stay warm. The extra pocket will hold a phone, kleenex, etc. Of course, the back is flannel, to keep it from sliding off (you cannot tie the quilt to the wheelchair in a nursing home, as it's against the rules to restrain someone). Also, I don't think it's long enough for a tall woman or man, but I have not yet tried it on someone in a wheelchair (I just put it in my lap while sitting in a chair, and I'm only 5'1". It just reached the top of my shoes.).
Well, I can't find where I put the photo, so will post it if I can find it.

I took the photo in artificial light, so the part that looks black is really dark blue.
