Yes, I wrap about 2 feet of rope and then clip on a spring type clothespin to hold the end. Then I sew and then I wrap again.
As for the color combinations, you wouldn't believe the fabrics that I used! Small prints, chosen for the most prominent color in them. When I thought I had enough rounds in the basket of one color, then I switched to another. Just went by eye.
