Whenever you come across a Singer machine, there is a serial number on it, sometimes on the front, other times not. You can call Singer's toll free # and they will tell you the model of the machine and when it was "born". Hope this helps!
Actually, the black Featherweights come in a black case, but the white/green Featherweights come in a green/beige case and the tan Featherweights come in a brown/tan box. The designation "Featherweight" is for the model 221 and 222 machines.

When you find the serial number, you can go to this website to find out when the serial number was released for production (note that it isn't the year the machine was manufactured). It will also tell you which factory the machine was manufactured and how many machines of that model were in that run.

This is definitely not a 221 Featherweight. I have one that looks a lot like it with a domed wooden case, and it is a model #97. It looks like a pretty machine, and if it works, $60 would not be a bad price.
