How long does it take you to do a quilt?

I still haven't finished a quilt that I started about 15 years ago. It is a hand pieced kaleidoscope. Am tired of working on it in fits & starts and am considering having someone else finishing the quilting process. Then I tell myself that I need to finish it so that it will mean more to whoever inherits it. It is a beautiful quilt - queen size.
Hang in there. Perhaps work on your quilt a little every day. Then work on other projects also that you can finish quickly - baby quilts, lap throws, etc. By doing this, you will be much more satisfied.

Because I hand quilt, and also include hand applique on most of my quilts, it takes me a LONG time to bring a quilt to completion. But I need that gratification (or maybe it's close to exhilaration!) when I finish a project, I have to do some smaller projects along the way. Today it's a rainy day in mid-MO, so I'll make my DD a tote for her b'day. Be kind to yourself . . . you'll make it!

I'm afraid I'll never finish it - and I've been collecting fabrics/patterns for other quilts I want to make, so I have a backlog already. I don't dare let myself start another for fear I'll never finish this first one.
How do you do it? Does it ever take you forever? I bet you don't let yourself buy for quilts you may never get to.

Am so sorry about the loss of your sister.
Start a new quilt, it just might get you going again.
Maybe you'll finish the queen, maybe you won"t. It's okay - there are no quilt police.
I seem to always have 12 or more quilts in the works; some I'll finish, some I'll grow tired of making and won't. It'll be a problem for my heirs, not one for me.

My first quilt was a lap-size and it took a couple of months. The next one was a t-shirt quilt that took almost a year. I've had some little ones that took a few days (machine quilted) and one even took 8 years. I finished that one as a challenge at the beginning of last year. Was I glad to get that one out of the house and to it's owner!! Yes, they are right -- hang in there and enjoy the ride.

You have suffered a big loss and my heart goes out to you. I would set the quilt aside and do something smaller, in a pattern and colors your sister would have liked. I will keep her memory alive for you, as you work on it. Then hang it in your home as a celebration of her life.

So sorry about the loss of your sister. I think you can see that we all have quilts that we can't get at or have put aside for whatever reason. Deadlines help me sometimes, but I also volunteer with our church quilt group. I make smaller lap quilts and I only have to do the fun part...the top. They finish them. God bless you and enjoy the friendship etc on this board.

Dear Naturalmama, Please do not get discouraged. You are just getting through a difficult time and still dealing with the your loss. You will get through this and when you are ready you will slowly get back to it. Give yourself time to heal.

Hey girl, I'm the queen of unfinished projects.
When my son was a smart 5 year old, he wanted me to make
him a quilt with all his favorite things, which he drew (sorta)
as a pattern for me.
I embroidered and appliqued a Monarch butterfly, a picture of
his darling Doberman Kurt, his favorite tennis racquet, etc.
I made enough for a twin quilt, then broke my ankle and other
bits of life kept getting in the way.
So just a few months ago I found them in cleaning out a closet
after my DH passed away...3 years ago. So now I'm going to
make my DS his quilt, which will be lap robe sized. I'm planning
on giving it to him for his birthday this May 28.
He'll be 42 then.

Don't give up. I just finished one that I had started 8 years ago. At that time I gave my husband the pieced top for our 30th wedding anniversary. I had planned to hand quilt it but ended up having part of it machine done and I did the center appliques by hand finishing it late the night before our 38th anniversary!!!!! It was worth it and turned out to be just what I wanted. Sometimes we have to wait for the "spirit" to spur us on to completion. Hang in there and when the time is right you'll go for it.
