A friend of mine just gave me a pre-cut quilt kit. It is to be appliqued and is a cute Sunbonnet Sue kit. I am just learning to applique and not sure how to handle this kit. Normally, I would turn under a hem on the applique pieces but this one doesn't call for that. I want to hand applique it and plan on using the blanket stitch. I am just worried about fraying around the edges of the applique once it is washed.

What do my quilting friends think?

if you use "steam a seam 2 lite" to fuse it down then do your blanket stitch it should not fray, at most it may be a little fuzzy on the edge. the lite is not hard to sew thru and is still soft
I have not had good luck with my blanket stitch, when it's washed the stitches move and twist and look terrible!

I would use a lightweight fusible interfacing under it, and a couple touches of glue will hold in place while you stitch, or stitch witchery can also hold in place. Or, you can sew the interfacing to the right side, cut a small slit in it and turn right side out.

Is Steam a Seam 2 lite a liquid? Sorry, this is new to me. LOL I guess I can go to the quilt shop and ask for it so I will understand better.

Steam a seam 2 is a double sided sticky with paper on both sides that you peel in order to stick (iron) to the fabric

How would I use it if the pieces are pre-cut?

when i do sunbonnet sue's i put light weight fusible webbing on the top of the fabric (after drawing sue piece on the fusible non bumpy side) and cut on the lines i drew. then slit the fusible and turn right side out. that makes the bumpy fusible side now on the back and the raw edges inside that. i fuse to background fabric and do a blanket stitch or other.

You would have to use the precut pieces as a guide to trace around. Lay them upside down on the paper of the Steam a Seam, trace them, and then cut them out. Then put them on the back of the applique pieces.
I would use a polyester thread to sew them on, cotton will shrink a bit and distort the stitches.
