I made this for my dad for Christmas. The block has insets that I had to hand piece in, and I was worried that the block wasn't laying flat. I posated the question to the forum and got a lot of good advice - the best was to just quilt it into submission! I did exactly that - when 4 blocks were put together, they made sort of a circle which I FMQ'd using a spiral pattern. I outlined each remaining star, again with FMQ (I need to get better at FMQ!!!!!). Rather than quilt the border, I 'wrote' all the things that I remembered that were specific to things I did or learned from my dad. (example: 'Special Memories; Boston University graduation weekend'). It came out very nicely and he was so pleased he cried!

Love it!!! and the idea of writing memories. That also would be a neat idea when my boys have kids...for the baby quilt write what I remember their dad did at that age...hmmm

I am not at all surprised that your dad cried! What a beautiful quilt  You made something special for him out of some of the special memories he helped make for you. It just doesn't get any better than that.

It was really easier than I thought. This was my second attempt at doing FMQ on a large piece (I don't have a longarm but my Babylok Quilter's Pro does a great job). 'Writing' using FMQ is actually easier than doing a pattern! (go figure...)
