I do that for all my charity quilts - quick and easy and I can play with decorative stitches to "top" stitch around all edges.

I do this for the charity quilts.(baby and lap robes) I press and either tie or run a few lines of stitches making sure I start at the top each time. Pinning helps too.

I've used that method before several times - came out fine.

Super quilts! Edited to add, hobbykat1955.

Stitching around the edge encases the edge seam making it stronger.

I thought that when you made a quilt like this, that it was tied not quilted?

I do all the quilts that I make for the neonatal unit at a local hospital that way. Its quick, easy and strong. You never know how a baby quilt is going to be taken care of. Also, a good way to do lap quilts.

You can also tie the quilt , machine quilt it simply or applique a design or such on it for stability.

I never make tied quilts. I use this method on some of the charity quilts and yes it can be machine quilted. I do that all the time. I make sure the quilt is smooth and use stitch in a ditch.
If the borders are a little off it isn't going to be noticed.
