Probably a dumb question but I am wanting to start a quilt that has templates. I do not want to use templates and there is an option to foundation piece. Can I do paper piecing instead? Are they the same except one way you end up with a double layer and the other only a single layer? Can you tell I have never done either method LOL.

I honestly don't know the absolute answer, it might depend on the way the block lays out, but it seems like you could do pp instead of foundation. I don't have a lot of experience with either one, though, so I could be wrong.

If something can be foundation pieced, it can be paper pieced. Paper is just a different foundation.

Same thing, one you sew on fabric, one you sew on paper. The term paper piecing and foundation piecing get intertwined alot I have noticed when searching for PP'd patterns :D:D:D

The pattern is called Bull Run Nine Patch. Thanks everyone for your answers. I have been thinking about this quilt for a month or so but don't do well with templates and only noticed today that the option to use foundation quilting was offered. Off to look at pattern again.

I find PP fast and easy...since you sew on the paper lines which give you straight lines. Buy yourself a paper piecing block book and you'll have every block you can imagine...

Bailey, PP is actually quite easy and very satisfying. If you choose a paper foundation, you tear it off when you have sewn one block onto the next. Carol Doak has some wonderful books/instructions. I'd try a simple sample piece first. (If you use muslin/fabric foundation, it remains part of the block/quilt, and yes, gives you 2 layers. I sometimes use a fabric foundation when making tablecloths/tablerunners, and leave out the batting.) Will be curious what you decide to do. ~karen
