My sewing machine/cutting table is against a wall because when I am piecing or quilting the wall 'holds' my quilt on the table.
If it was in the middle of the room my fabric/quilt would always be falling off the edge. My room isn't large enough to place it in the middle. If it was, I would still have it against a wall.
My ironing board is set up where ever I need it to be set up, depending on what machine I am using. My room isn't large enough to have a 'permanent' ironing area. When I don't need to iron I can take it down and stash it behind the door.
Set things up whichever way is convienient for you.
If it doesn't work. Its easy enough to move things around.
    Happy Quilting!

I love your room , Featherweight. I wonder what my brother would say if I said I wanted to start all over. lol
Not sure how mine is going to end up yet. But I do know the table with the machine is going under the window.
I just got book cases yesterday so I need to put them together and get all my books and magazines up. Mine is a make do room until I win the lottery.
Pics are of my room at this moment. Hopefully soon everything will be sorted, cleared and rearranged so I can actually work in here. I am taking down the design wall and am going to cover the sliding doors to the closet with flannel covered foam board. I need more thread holders too. One day at a time.

If any side is to be against the wall, make it the short side!

I like to move around mine so I pull it out from the wall when I'm cutting. I would leave it in the middle of the room all the time if I had enough space

I have my sewing table facing out, then I can see out the door, watch tv, and if I have a large project it doesn't bunch up against the wall, i set up a chair/ironing board to extend the table to hold the project.

Mine is not in the center but off to the side as my LA takes up 2/3 of the room but I can still get around all sides, which I do a lot as I don't like to move my fabric once I start cuttung.

What I would like to know is how some have their machines facing a wall. What do you do to quilt a large piece. My cutting table is outside my sewing room so I can keep it open. Most of my center floor space is taken up by a queen size bed. My machine's right side is towards the wall so I can put a folding table to left or in front of the machine table for more space.
