There was a beautiful true black by either Kaufmann or Hoffman (there is nothing on either selvedge) about 5 years back that was the best I've ever seen. It was loomed in Japan and had a lovely sheen and soft hand to it. I bought 9 yards at the time and it has never been made since. The LQS I bought it at tried to get more as it sailed out of the shop with no luck. That has been my benchmark for true black ever since and even the best Kona or Miller black doesn't come close to this one. If anyone hears of something like this I'd love to know myself.

I saw a Michael Miller solid black on Saturday at a LQS in San Antonio, thought it looked good but decided to ask here before buying.
I don't know the brand, but "Amish Black" is my favorite. Maybe google it?

I don't like Kona solids. They are way too thick and dense. Not a good "hand."

I have used the black black fabric for some things, but my favorite is an "almost black" by Moda that seems to go with almost anything and softens the starkness of the black a little. And it is smoother, not so grainy, as many plain blacks.

Our RJR sales rep has told me that Keepsake Quilting sells the RJR cotton supreme as their "Amish Black".

We sell it too, along with the Kona black.

I think that the Kona is a little thicker but the RJR has a nicer feel, to me. Both are equally dark uniform black in color. RJR has a slight sheen on one side of the fabric while Kona is the same on both sides.
