I am new to the message board and, I've got a question for the pro's.... I have cross stitch prestamped quilt blocks. They are white blocks with multicolored dresden plates. I was wondering about using colored thread to quilt it. Will the colored thread show up?? I think I'm gonna use a floral print for the back. I just don't know about the front. What was I thinking?? I don't even come close to living in a white world. Will the colored thread be enough to make a difference in the appearance. Just wondering, and can you quilt with embroidery thread?? Please help... Sarah

I just did one with colored thread and it barely shows up. It does look nice though.

I quilt using polyester embroidery thread all of the time. Not sure if you are meaning embroidery floss? I like embroidery thread, it is thick and only one strand is needed. But all I do is with my machine :D:D:D

There are also even heavier weight threads available, they would show up even more. Embroidery thread is 30wt and there are 20 and 10wts too :D:D:D

    Hi Sarah,

Yes you can use colored thread to quilt it, however dark colored thread on white fabric is very unforgiving in showing mistakes. The lighter in value you go with the colored thread the less any mistakes would show. You can FMQ your blocks heavily with colored thread and it will definitely give the appearance of adding color to your light blocks. Here is a pic of example showing FMQ of a very light colored thread on black fabric to give you an idea

Hand quilt? Easy solution then, sashiko thread or perle cotton. Will show up fine. Shiboridragon.com for sashiko thread or perle cotton from anywhere that sells embroidery supplies.

This is wonderful!! Please forgive me I'm not very computer savy.. Wit the blocks being white with the colored dresden plates, I was thinking about quilting the corners in a blue or teal in the dresden pattern. I wish I knew computer to show pictures!!!! I've worked a long time on these blocks and don't want to screw them up!!

I piece my tops on the machine, because I think it adds strength. Then I hand quilt and bind. I'm self taught so I don't know a lot about proper procedure on doing things. But, I really enjoy quilting, and so far my quilts have stood the test of time. I started quilting in 1992. I wish I knew more about this computer so, I could show pictures...
