I'm in NW IN, where are you? Have you done free-motion stitching close to the raw edge? Or try the zigzag as I'm planning.

Guess we're a bit far apart.... I agree with you about practicing some stitches. See what you like and go from there. Today in quilting anything goes - there are no real rules!

Here is one of the 12 Nutcrackers I'm working on for my DGD's quilt. I have 9 of them finished and took time off to join the Row Robin and Farmer's Wife Quilt before working on the last 3. I appliqued the Mouse King using a very narrow satin stitch. Hope this helps. Belles
Love the nutcrackers. Where did you get the patterns?

Does anybody use fusible interfacing for applique? I bought a kit from Nancy's Notions and the directions had you interface the fabric wrong sides together, then sew on the lines, the turn inside out and no raw edge but ability to iron down. then you could choose or not choose to zigzag or ladder stitch. It was different shapes of fruit and I ended up with the lumpiest fruit on the earth. I used pinking shears and a bamboo point turner, but could never get a clean edge like raw edge does. do I need to perfect my technique or is it just impossible?

If I'm going to zigzag (satin stitch)then I want it fused flat to the background without any extra bulk.
