I am wondering something. I have never done a quilt as you go quilt, and I am not really sure I totally understand how to do it but I think I do.
I am gonna do a beach ball quilt that I posted about earlier. The blocks are 10x10. Do I have to cut the batting, and backing just a bit bigger then the top? And my other question is this...Do I just make any design I want with my machine on the top of the block all the way to the edge or just part way? I suppose I should do a search on it, But I really like to hear everyones responses. Thanks in advance.

This is the way I know QAYG.

Cut the batting the same size as the block. Cut the backing 2 inches larger. Measure 1 inch inward on the backing and mark. Align the block and batting, centered on the backing (at the mark). pin together. Quilt any way you want, all the way to the edge. Attach the back of the blocks together to the front, then fold the front edge over twice and top stitch. This makes a border around the block and attaches the blocks together.

Bayside quilting has a video to go with this, called the Fun and Done method.

Sounds like fun. Maybe I'll get the courage to try making one.

I am doing the french rose pattern this way, but didnt have good instructions and only made the backing 1 inch larger than the square and the batting, but there seems to be plenty of room to turn over and stitch. Dont know what possesed me to do a king size, 80, 9" finished blocks and 44 border blocks.LO!!! I have over half the blocks sewed into strips and am hoping to finish up in the next week or two. I am a new quilter and I am learning a lot in the process. I will post a pic of the finished quilt when I get it finished.
