    I think the part you are talking about is a gray color, and it covers the bobbin. It looks like it is there. Top tension should be set about 4.5 for normal sewing. Have fun.

    Try a new needle too - silly, but this can make a big difference. (MIL may have hit the button when sewing it on....) I think you're going to love this machine!

    :thumbup: :lol: when you adjust the top tenison always make sure the the the presser foot is up that releases the tension on the thread so it will adjust to the proper tension.

    My sons blessed me for xmas with a new Viking its the Emerald 118 i love the up & down needle also the self threader. I use it almost every day.. I am a widow & have lots of time. I was so pleased..So for next xmas i am making both of them a quilt. Which the do not know about.
