I would first ask what her favorite colors are, then if she has any hobbies or sports. I've been seeing a lot of the rectangular blocks made around another rectangle in vivid colors lately and they are pretty. I might also suggest picking out a picture in a quilt magazine and see what she likes. At 12 they can be particular about what they like and don't like - I say this having survived my daughter's tween and teen years as well as early adulthood. Actually, she's 33 now and I would still ask her as she is very particular. When she was living in Florida my girl friend (who became her friend, surrogate mother) suggested that I would make her very happy if I made her a snowflake shower curtain, and curtains. Do you know how hard it was to find that fabric, especially just after Thanksgiving. I finally found some at JoAnn's, then bought white towels and added blue soutashe (sp) to the border - she loved them. Score one for Mom. Good luck.

My grandaughter is 12. She likes the bright lime green color. I just got her some fabric for a pillow case that has daisy like flowers scattered over it in all kinds of bright colors. I'm sure she would like whatever you make.

Thank you everyone for all the suggests. I am a 7-24/365 caregiver for my Mother (ALZ) so shopping is in my stash or from some of you on this board, or internet. Cheynne is her name and her Mothers name is Peggy. Peggy worked at Walmart where I use to shop until 4 years ago when Mother became ill overnight(for me to see. Mother fell in December'95,My 75 year old husband and I took her to the hospital Dr.s say she fine. Jan '96 (me 58then)I fell knee cap came lose and Dr had 1/2 body cast on me for 12 weeks. Three weeks I fell again broke left wrist. Husband going back and forth taking of me and my Mother and working. He did not notice any difference with her, because she was always quite around him soon she became that way withme. Being alone(my Dad had just died so I thought she was greiving for him.
Time has elasped till 2009. Peggy over heard me talking abaout I will need to have help with my Mom, Peggy said she was taking classes to certified in the home health care field and she would help and let me have some time, 32 miles from the nearest town so I am alone. The day before Thanksgiving Peggy's husband went to their barn and he had been drinking and slipped and caught his foot in a rope and he died hanging in between the rafters in the barn.I did not this until later when I called for help. Told Peggy not to worry about us just be there for that little girl. Jan 25 Peggy was driving to work and was involved in a head on collision and every bone was broken. No head trauma. I found this out in March. I made a quilt using the Baby Bunting pattern thanks to one member on the board she told how to do. So I did it in shades of green and pink. Called it Mending Bones, evey block was uneven and their was one perfect block. Peggy's child Cheynne now wants me to make her one not Baby Bunting. She likes lime green, did not have any in my stash so I went to internet today and bought fabric..and that is a short story of it. Thank you for reading this.

Here are 2 I made for young girls. Pattern is Piece of Cake. Its made with 10" squares. I made the peace sign/Tied Dyed one and just cut my own 10"squares. All you do is cut the squares and then just change out the center 2" strip. First cut on square is a 3" strip then a 2" strip that leaves you a 5" strip. After you sew the center strips trim all squares to 9 1/2". Then just arrange the squares how you like them. Next was a 2 1/2" border then a 6" border. on both I just put minkie on the back and stitched in the ditch. The girls loved them both.

So if anyone could tell me about patterns that they have made for 12 year olds. I thank you ahead of time. Marye

Have you seen those quilts that are flip flops all done in bright neon colours? I haven't made one, nor do I know who designed it or where to find the pattern. BUT I would think a 12 year old girl would love that, and that it would be cool to have all through her teenage years!
