I think I remember a while back someone calling these machines "Sew and Throw". Why....this really does sew nicely, today!!

Sounds like a tension problem, make sure the machine is threaded right, and also check to see if there is lint or something in the tension discs that are keeping them from holding the thread tight. You can test it by increasing and decreasing the tension and seeing if it makes a difference. If it doesn't, I would suspect something isn't working right there.
