I like to use Crayola washable markers. They wash out and come in lots of colors so they always show up on different color fabrics. I have even ironed them and they stiff washed out but your need to test them on your fabrics.

the best marker for handquilting for me is a mechanical pencil...marked just dark enough to see.....the thread will pretty much cover that pencil mark. I like the mechanical pencil better than a regular pencil because the point is always a point...does not get dull and thicker.....

I use a mechanical pencil with #2 lead as well. I do have a white one also but rarely need to use that one. I don't think there's a marking tool on the market I haven't tried and the mechanical pencil wins hands down. And I've never had issues with it not washing out.
