Is it possible to get a room with 2 beds? You might have better luck finding a roommate.

Yes, but if I don't find a roommate, I'm stuck paying for a bigger room by myself.

if you don't have two beds you'll be stuck paying for this room by yourself. no one will share a bed with a stranger.

what about 2 twin beds? sofabeds aren't comfortable unless you want to take turns in it.

I attended Costume College outside LA for over 5 years, and each year there were four of us in two queen beds--usually strangers matched up by a roommate service the event offered. Everyone was neat and didn't spread out over the bedroom or bathroom. I never experienced any problems, nor did any of the other roommates.

Actually, I always thought it was more fun that way. You had instant new friends and someone to show-and-tell with every night and, possibly, share breakfast and dinner some nights.

In my experience, if someone wants to go and needs to cut down on costs to do so, they're willing to share a bed.

does the hotel have a service that puts people together? or the event itself? maybe the event has a hotline or forum-type page that you can use. sometimes guilds have shared rooms and if they need another person, you can fill in that way. keep looking. it's far enough away that you can cancel, isn't it? if something better shows up?
