Yes, the mariner's compass was all hand pieced as well  I get more hand sewing done these days than time at my machine  but at least I'm still quilting

Was it hard to find just the right shades of the colors you used? You did an excellent job of picking out those colors!
Karen Coombs has a range of fabrics called Shade Cascade, it has 4 shades of the one colour in stripes across the width of the fabric. I used some of those, and the rest were made up from bits and pieces I had, a mix of fossil ferns and batiks.
I just fluked the colours, I didn't have alot to choose from and fabric is ridiculously expensive here so I make sure I only buy just what I need and make do with what I have.

Love the colors making an optical illusion! Very nice. Your son should love it.

No not difficult. Those horrible Y seams are easy when you are hand piecing.

Make sure you STARCH, STARCH, STARCH  and handle the fabric gently so it doesn't stretch on the bias.

I marked the 1/4" line around my pieces and stopped 1/4"from the edges which made sewing the Y seam easier.

I might try machine piecing one, but on the other hand I have run out of hand piecing projects so I might just have to make another by hand
