    When you baste the layers together, do you use single or double thread?

    It depends on how slick my thread is. If it's cheaper, thicker, fuzzier thread then one should do it.

    For the rare times I do thread basting I use a single strand and make sure I don't have the lines too far apart.

    I use a single strand of Japanese basting thread. And I baste with herringbone stitches about an inch apart. I think I could actually throw a small piece (wallhanging or crib sized quilt) in the dryer and not risk anything shifting.

    single- basting thread is just pulled out & tossed away after-so no sense in wasting twice the amount. and it's alot easier to to pull the threads when it's time.

    Single. DCM. Herringbone pattern. It should be simple to pull out the basting as you get to it, because machine quilting over your basting is a bad idea.
